As Germany nears the end of its Presidency of the European Union, it continues to work actively in the field of science, technology and innovation. CORDIS has highlighted key themes in Germany's scientific activity during its Presidency on the Council Presidency Web service at: URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/germany/home.html(opens in new window) One of the recent highlights of Germany's research activities is an initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to promote nano-technology, which will include the provision of centres to train researchers in the necessary skills, and of financial support for research in this field. Germany has also raised the profile of issues surrounding the sustainable use of water, despite it currently having sufficient water resources for its own needs, reflecting how Germany is working with other Member States to achieve sustainable management of environmental resources throughout Europe. Germany is also keen to promote the movement of researchers throughout the European Union, particularly for young researchers and students, after a recent BMBF study of the experiences of Erasmus students confirmed that those who have studied abroad have good prospects of entering employment. Detailed information and links related to these issues are available from the CORDIS German Presidency Web service at the address above. The service also offers access to press releases from Edelgard Bulmahn, the German Science Minister, and news on research and technology in the regions. By clicking 'R&D in Germany', on the navigation bar on the German Presidency page, CORDIS users will have access to a complete directory of every R&D institution in Germany, compiled by the BMBF, one of the most comprehensive and detailed information resources about a Member State's R&D infrastructure that has ever been made available on-line. The service also provides a summary of Germany's participation in the European Commission's Fourth RTD Framework Programme, and links to financial statistics giving a breakdown of Germany's spending on R&D.
