Development of a wind-wave power open-sea platform equipped for hydrogen generation with support for multiple users of energy

Exploitable results

Result description

A nano membrane-based system was designed with the objective of supplying the quality of water required for hydrogen generation. Low fouling nano membranes were developed to cope with marine organisms and fouling that would be encountered on a multi-technology platform.

Result description

Software tool based in GIS (Geographical Information System) which combines information on environmental, geophysical, radars and communication and meteo-oceanography aspects to identify and assess suitable locations for different types of marine projects including: wave energy; wind energy; hydrogen production; desalination; floating anaerobic digestors and subsea cable routes.

Result description

DAPP (partner) developed the platform concept design, integrating the different elements for renewable energy capture (tide/waves/wind), transformation and storage. Different technologies, configurations, dimensions and plant processing capacities were considered.

IT Power Ltd led the development of an efficient and holistic offshore operations and maintenance (O&M) strategy for a H2Ocean array using an innovative combination of O&M strategies from different offshore industries. This has the potential to benefit developers of combined technology offshore platform projects through efficient consideration of O&M procedures and symbiotic strategies.

Result description

A wireless sensor network for a multi-use platform has been proposed. The network is able to communicate through long distances and is flexible to adapt to multiple layouts. Earlier adaptations have been used in a number of applications such as structural health monitoring of wind turbines.

Viking Fish Farms Ltd has led the development of a system for offshore integrated aquaculture as a part of an offshore renewable energy platform. Appropriate site conditions and systems for five different types of aquaculture species were evaluated: salmon, sea bass, sea bream, seaweed and mussels.

Result description

Sustainable Technologies led the development of a novel type of anaerobic digester designed for offshore operation. The prototype developed has the potential to produce biogas from organic waste such as dead salmon. This gas could then be burnt to produce power at aquaculture farming sites.
