Co-ordinating project for electronic authors right management systems

Exploitable results

The ESPRIT COPEARMS project concerns the management of electronic intellectual property rights in multimedia objects. EDIFACT is used to exchange messages, such as usage rights, usage statistics and billing information between distributed Electronic Rights Management Systems (ERMS). ERMEDI is an ERMS/EDIFACT training course. A two-level training course will provide a solid grounding in the design and implementation of EDIFACT messages and the issues concerned with standardisation and implementation. The training is intended for the technical specialists of projects and consortiums implementing EDI and Electronic Rights Management Systems (ERMS). The first level of training will provide a basic understanding of EDIFACT, the issues involved in message design, their standards and implementation. The second level of training will build on this to provide practical skills in message design and implementation. The first level training course is called "Designing EDIFACT messages: The Essentials". The second level training course is called "Designing EDIFACT messages: In-Depth". An instructor is recommended for the second level course, whereas the first level course is suitable for self-paced learning. An extension to the course is currently under development, which will provide a demonstration of ERMEDI in action. A web-based demonstrator will access an ERMS contracts database to show, set and dynamically negotiate the usage rights for different types of digital objects.
Today the COPEARMS project is providing services for the design and implementation of ECMS in 6 projects: TISSUS (ESPRIT), implementation of an ECMS allowing users to access databases of textile images (artistic heritage images and marketable images); COPYSMART (ESPRIT), assistance focused on three pilot applications of an industrial low-cost solution implementing IPR management based on the CITED model. The user pilots concern a library application, a teletraining one and a marketing CD-ROM one; MULTIMEDIATOR (ACTS), intelligent multimedia brokerage service using ATM networks and interfacing suppliers and customers (mainly SMEs) of copyrighted information in the publishing area; TALISMAN (ACTS), development of standard copyright mechanisms to monitor the usage of digital products (in particular video services); EUROPE MMM (TELEMATICS), demonstration of a commercial package offering educational multimedia material, which can be customised by the end-user to fit its needs; VENIVA (ESPRIT), design of an ECMS allowing users to access databases with maps and associated materials (artistic heritage images) related to the history of Venice. The experience from those projects is that thanks to COPEARMS services when ECMS are implemented all parameters have been considered, which results in saving of development costs and time.
