Periodic Report Summary 1 - TCAINMAND (Tri Continental Alliance in Numerical Methods applied to Natural Disasters)

The Tri Continental Alliance in Numerical Methods applied to Natural Disasters (TCAiNMaND) aims at building a coordinated Sino - Latin American - European team of researchers sharing expertise to jointly exploit and develop open source codes and numerical methods for designing effective tools to mitigate major natural disasters in the three regions, by means of a collaborative interchange of software resources, scientific knowledge and scientific experts in the different fields.
TCAiNMaND acts as a platform promoting knowledge exchanges between the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE, Spain), Swansea University (UK), the Mathematics Research Center (CIMAT, Mexico) and Tsinghua University (China), in the area of numerical simulations applied at the prevention, mitigation and management of natural disasters. The open-nature of the project encourages the participation of all the scientifc community of the three involved regions, as well as relevant experts.
Our goals are:
- To identify major problems in natural disasters and scientifc advancements to address them
- To map the initiatives, opportunities and public funding of the three regions in connection with the natural disaster management.
- To foster an all-inclusive dialogue about the trends in the research for natural disaster mitigation able to engage the research community and the local authorities
- To adapt the relevant numerical tools to the specific needs of each region
- To train a group of researchers able to cope with the challenges posed by natural disaster mitigation
The work will be developed under the following work packages:
- Numerical Methods for Real Time Computations
- Numerical Methods for a better Resilient Design in Civil Structures
- New engineering materials for a most secure buildings
- Progressive collapse of structures under earthquake loading
- Image Analysis applied to disaster monitoring
- Multiobjective Optimization for decision making to test confronting scenarios in case of natural disaster
After two years of work and 34 exchanges between the four institutions involving 27 people (researchers and managers), the project has already contributed to the publication of 11 scientific articles, 4 thesis, 13 technical reports, 17 technical seminars, 4 semi-plenary lectures in relevant congresses, 5 lectures in scientific congresses. The first two work packages are completed: WP1 on the “Identification of Reference Problems on Natural Disasters,” (3 deliverables generated) and W2 providing a State-of-the-Art on Simulation Tools for Natural Disasters (1 deliverable generated).
After two years, the network has reached a mature level, with fruitful collaborations leading to significant advancements in ten different codes: error analysis and meshing improvements for PFEM-2 (WP3); a new approach for Coupled Bonded Particle and Lattice Boltztmann Method (BPLBM), a new FEM/DEM formulation for civil engineering problems, a Discrete Volume Method for brittle fracture, a Finite Element Analysis for anisotropic rock damage, and a KGD model for fracture propagation (WP4); the optimization and parallelization of PLCd in (WP5); a model for a new triangular shell element in OpenSees (WP6); the adaptation of Risk AT to Guanajuato (WP7); and finally the optimization of a material code (WP8). During these 24 months new cooperation paths have been opened, which are expected to deliver the first scientific outputs shortly.
Finally, and most importantly, the technical work by some of the seconded ESR has led to the graduation of 4 researchers: two for the Master Degree and 2 for a Doctoral Degree. The project has contributed to take a step forward in the technical training of some outstanding young researcher and allow them to advance in their scientific career.
