Final Report Summary - MN-LN SMMS (Synthesis and characterization of Mn-Ln polynuclear complexes with interesting magnetic properties by the use of diol type ligands)

The main scientific objectives of this project include the synthesis and characterization of new Manganese (Mn) / Lanthanide (Ln) compounds containing diol type ligands as well as the development of new synthetic procedures towards such species. These compounds are expected to possess interesting magnetic properties, such as single molecule magnetism behavior and could potentially be used in important technological applications including ultrahigh – density information storage, quantum computing, etc.
During the implementation of this proposal, 49 new compounds have been isolated and characterized. Amongst them, 24 are Mn/Ln heterometallic clusters bearing diol type ligands. These compounds are the initial examples of Mn/Ln species with these ligands whereas the majority of them display unprecedented structural types and interesting magnetic properties. A new synthetic methodology towards heterometallic Mn/Ln clusters has been successfully developed, which is based on the employment of two different diol-type ligands in the reaction mixture. A part of these results has been published in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented in international scientific conferences, whereas two more papers are currently under preparation and will be submitted for publication in due course. In particular, so far 8 papers have been published containing results from this project with one of them featured in the front cover of the highly prestigious journal Chem. Soc. Rev. and another one being a contribution after invitation in the special issue of Current Inorg. Chem. “Emerging young scientists in Molecular Magnetism”. Furthermore, results of this proposal have been presented in 5 international conferences with poster or oral presentations. In addition, results of the proposal have been presented in the wide public in various occasions (e.g. in the researcher’s night event that took place in September 2012 in Nicosia).
For the implementation of this proposal, R collaborated with undergraduate and graduate students of HO and thus had the opportunity to advise and supervise young scientists. In addition, she also participated in teaching activities of HO. In the context of the interaction with the students, R transferred them her knowledge in modern techniques for the synthesis and characterization of molecule – based materials and also developed her instructive abilities. Furthermore, during the implementation of this project, R was trained in characterization techniques that she did not have previous experience (e.g. in single crystal x-ray crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, etc), and also established / strengthened her collaborations with research groups of HO or other countries (Greece, USA, Canada). Thus, R during the implementation of this project, had the opportunity to significantly improve her skills as a teacher, instructor and researcher something that was very beneficial for the further integration of her research career. In fact, the assets that R obtained during the implementation of this proposal were very beneficial for the further integration of her academic career and, thus she recently accepted an offer for a lecturer position in NUI Galway, Ireland.
In summary, during the implementation of this proposal: 1) new Mn/Ln compounds bearing diols have been isolated and characterized displaying unprecedented crystal structures and interesting magnetic properties, 2) new synthetic procedures towards such species have been successfully developed, 3) 8 papers have been published with one them featured in the front cover of one of the most highly prestigious scientific journals, 4) R was trained in characterization techniques and she also transferred her expertise to the students of HO, and 5) R’s academic career had been significantly developed, thus she recently accepted an offer for a lecturer position in NUI Galway, Ireland. From the above discussion, it is clear that the implementation of the project was satisfactory and all the objectives have been successfully achieved. Closing this part of the final report, we would like to acknowledge all the EU-FP7 stuff for their creative co-operation and support during the implementation of the project.
