Periodic Report Summary 1 - ORGBIO (Organic Bioelectronics)

OBJECTIVES

Realising the promise of “Organic Bioelectronics” requires research and training not only crossing disciplines, such as electrical engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, and materials science, but also crossing our European countries. OrgBIO is at the core of European technological innovation and is becoming an indispensable part of the educational canon. Its objective is to establish a world-class training platform spreading around the highly interdisciplinary / intersectorial European-led area of organic bioelectronics. Education along with science and entrepreneurial mindsets and attitudes is the core of the OrgBIO training programme, which aims at excellence and innovation.

Using different technologies the network is developing multifunctional systems with high sensitivity that are also flexible, conformable and over large areas for various biomedical / biological applications. Multi-analyte and disposable analytical systems manufactured by large-area printing methods aimed at providing services to individuals and healthcare community.

The OrgBIO network's main objectives are summarised below:

i) Conveying novel organic biosensing technologies into multifunctional diagnostic test platforms made available through industrial partners;
ii) Strengthening research in this strategic research field, by;
- Teaching and Training the next generation of scientists, team leaders, lecturers and entrepreneurs through scientific excellence and business innovation;
- Establishing a European organic bioelectronics community.

RECRUITMENT

While 3 ESRs were recruited either at the very start of the project or shortly thereafter, the remaining ESRs (9) were recruited towards M12 or M13 due to the amendment procedure which took place at the beginning of the project.

All positions were advertised according to EU rules and all recruited researchers were made aware of the project’s goals, objectives & Annex I, and of their rights and entitlements in each country.

A very good nationality spread and gender balance (7 males, 5 females) was achieved.

Furthermore, one ER position was recently filled at TUM and another one is underway at UNIBA.

TRAINING

A series of training schools and workshops were organised and well attended. They are summarised below.

- Training School 1: “New Polymers for Bioelectronics”. The training school’s scope was slightly broadened and its title was changed to “New Materials for Bioelectronics”. It took place from March 30th until April 1st 2015 at the Università degli Studi di Bari “Aldo Moro” in Bari (Italy). A panel of internationally renowned researchers gave lectures to a packed audience of ESRs, invited and paying guests. The feedback was extremely good (4.36 / 5).

- Training School 2: “Electronic Materials at the Interface with Biology”. OrgBIO’s second training school followed the Mid-Term Review meeting and was part of the NANOTEXNOLOGY 2015 conference which explored opportunities in the emerging Organic Electronics and Nanotechnology areas and attracts more than 2,000 researchers, scientists, engineers, business and technical professionals in the sector. It took place on July 4th until July 5th 2015 and its impact was greatly enhanced by its association to the NANOTEXNOLOGY 2015 conference.

- Workshop: Entrepreneurial training. ESRs attended the 1st instalment of their entrepreneurial training provided for by UTUM from October 16th until October 18th 2014 in Munich (Germany). Designing Value Propositions, Exploring Customer Segments and Pitching were amongst the main activities. Two further workshops aimed at exploring the individual project’s commercial potential and each ESR’s entrepreneurial inclination are envisaged.

- Workshop: Advanced management for European research projects. Bavarian Research Alliance provided ESRs with an insight into EU Research Policy, EU funding, the Enterprise Europe Network, as well as a training on Project management and Dissemination on October 15th 2014 in Munich (Germany).

SCIENTIFIC RESULTS

Below are the highlights of the OrgBIO results acheived so far.

- Selection for organic semiconductors, bio-receptors, and analytes;
- Development and provision of biocompatible organic ionogels;
- Testing and integration of light activated polymer valves;
- Development of nanostructured conducting polymers and nanocomposites;
- Surface modification of sensors with biological receptors / membrane-mimic layers;
- Initial progress in understanding the requirements for large scale printing on flexible plastic substrates;
- Bio-receptors integration in the OTFT active part and surfaces characterisation;
- Integration of novel materials in a TFT configuration;
- OTFT biosensors development on rigid substrates;
- Development of OTFT biosensors and multi-analyte devices on rigid substrates;.
- Development of novel devices for online cell analysis and cell signal recording;
- Development of actuating and stimulation devices for cell biology;
- Set-up of various spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements for probing surfaces;
- Validation of the electrodynamic model for PEDOT:PSS films;
- Realisation and characterisation of single bioelectronics devices;
- Pressure sensor with OECTs;
- Cytometric measurements with OECTs;
- Deposition of carbon nanotubes films;
- Functionalisation of gold gate electrodes with biological recognition elements;
- Physical and behavioral modeling of single bioelectronics devices.
