Periodic Report Summary 1 - DIAAMOND (Development of Non-destructive Inspection Approaches for Automatic detection and MONitoring of Damage evolution)

Project Context and Objectives:
The aim of this Project is to develop innovative Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques to on-line monitor CFRP damages during structural tests execution. The demonstrator will include one or more NDT techniques. NDT instrumentation will perform automatically and without human intervention data acquisition and analysis and will transfer results through web to the structural test control system in real-time.

Up to now, ultrasonic conventional manual inspection is carried out. For safety reasons, facilities are stopped before. One of the first steps of the Project will consist in demonstrating the feasibility of novel NDT techniques. Among others, non-contact advanced ultrasonic inspection is proposed (laser ultrasonics, air-coupled UT) as well as other imaging techniques, such as infrared thermography and laser shearography. All these approaches are postulated with the aim of:
Avoiding human intervention
Reducing inspection time
Improving inspection quality by providing NDT data positioning and recording
Simplifying system automation
Providing processed data by means of image processing and data fusion, extracting automatically relevant information to support structural test follow up and associated decision making procedures

A NDT demonstrator will be validated at subcomponent level an in a more realistic scenario.

Project Results:
Since the beginning of the Project, Work Package 1 (Selection of suitable NDT technique for hybrid CFRP with dissimilar material joints structural tests monitoring and principle of automation) has been already accomplished, giving as a result the achievement of Milestone 1 as well (Selection of NDT techniques). The technique chosen to implement in the initial prototype is Infrared Thermography, because of different reasons, such as:
Capability of easy inspection set-ups
Reduced inspection times
Capability of evaluation of large areas in very short processing times Capability of live monitoring inspections, suitable for the detection of damage apparition and evaluation of its evolution

Work Package 2 (Design of an automated NDT monitoring system) and Work Package 3 (Development of the automated NDT system and system integration) have been already started. The work already performed in these Work Packages will give as a result a Demo at Topic Manager facilities with an initial prototype in the following months.

Potential Impact:
The expected final results consist in a final prototype integrated in the test rig where structural tests will be performed over a cockpit mockup. In these context, the prototype will be able of damage monitoring and automation in terms of processing data evaluation and sending relevant information through web to the appropriate user terminals, as well as decision making. There will be as well an industrialisation assessment of the technology at the end of the project. Test time reduction
Early damage detection and on-line access to processed data
Application to aircraft production programmes involving composite structures
Application to other industries that make an intensive use of composite materials
