Mid-Term Report Summary - SPECAP (Precision laser spectroscopy of antiprotonic and pionic atoms)

This project aims to measure the characteristic frequencies of atoms containing special subatomic particles called pions and antiprotons. The pion is a particle consisting of two quarks, whereas the antiproton is the antimatter counterpart of the proton. In this way, the mass of the pion and antiproton will be determined with the highest possible precision. This in turn will enable us to study the CPT symmetry of nature, which postulates that if all the matter in the universe were replaced with antimatter, and the flow of time reversed, and left-right interverted, physical laws of the subatomic scale would be indistinguishable from those of our normal matter universe. The first measurements have been carried out at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) ring cyclotron facility and the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. The results will be published soon.
