Final Report Summary - VIP (Voxel Imaging PET Pathfinder)

Voxel Imaging PET pathfinder (VIP) is a project to develop a modular detectors based on pixel CdTe detector bonded to dedicated ASIC. When these pixel sensors are stacked on top of each other they form true 3D detector. VIP project has developed its own pixel ASIC VIP-PIX with 100 pixels and with pixel pitch of 1mm. The 2mm thick Schottky pixel CdTe bonded to the VIP-PIX with BiSn solder bump at very low temperature, achieving a leakage current of 70pA/mm2 at room temperature and at bias voltage of 500V/mm. The energy resolution measured as FWHM for 511keV and at a bias of 500V/mm, is found equal 2.3%. The FWHM time coincidence resolution is equal12.5nsec at bias of 1000V/mm. Given that the Line Of Response (LOR) PET events collected by VIP-PET are almost noise free, less than 5% of scatter fraction, and with negligible parallax, given the voxel size is 1mm x 1mm x 2mm, the VIP-PET performance reaches the intrinsic limit set by the physics of PET. Moreover, given the clean sample of the LORs used to produce the PET image, we found that the Time Of Flight information can hardly add any significant improvement to the image quality.
The VIP project has evaluated the idea, using simulation, to build Compton Camera based on the conceptual design of the VIP PET. We have found that the performance of such Compton Camera, when compared to current state of the art gamma cameras, reduces the radiation dose by a factor of 50 and improve the volumetric image spatial resolution by a factor of 25. Effectively the performance of VIP Compton Camera is comparable to the current PET devices.
