Mid-Term Report Summary - FAST FILTERING (Fast Filtering for Computer Graphics, Vision and Computational Sciences)

Digital filtering is the process of analysing general signals, such as audio or video recordings, or a heart's electrogram, by breaking them into fewer yet more meaningful components that provide meaningful information. Filtering large signals is a computationally-tedious task requiring considerable time and energy and often acts as a limiting factor in terms if the resolution, or accuracy, that can be used in practice.

The ERC-funded Fast Filtering Research research project aims to develop efficient computer algorithms for performing digital filtering. The main idea driving this project is breaking the signals into even smaller elementary components, called Wavelets, and exploiting the sparsity of these elements in order to gain computational speedup. Since Wavelets proved themselves as a very versatile building-blocks, the numerical schemes developed in this research project hold the promise of being widely-applicable for many fields of both science and engineering.
