Mid-Term Report Summary - MOLBIL (Molecular Billiards in Slow Motion)
When molecules collide, we think of the scattering process as a set of billiard balls colliding. At high energies, this very simple picture indeed captures the main aspects of molecular collisions. At low collision energies, however, the wave-character of particles starts dominating, and the scattering can only be described using quantum mechanics. We have developed unique methods to image the true quantum nature of molecular collisions. We hav eexperimentallty observed, for the first time, diffraction oscilllations in molecular angular scattering distributions, as well as quamtum tunneling effects for low-energy molecular collisions. This yields unprecendented precise views on molecular collision processes.
