Mid-Term Report Summary - LINASS (Light-induced NanoAssembly)

We have learnt to assemble tiny chunks of matter into new configurations using a combination of molecular glue and forces produced by illuminating light. This has allowed us to corral small numbers of molecules into small cavities where we can watch them, and in some cases control what they do. Major successes including making tiny objects which can push surprisingly hard when switched on by a beam of light, that should allow us to start exploring how to build nanomachines. We have also learnt that gold atoms can be pushed around by light, and are learning how to make electrical connections on the smallest scale using the right colours and light powers.
