Periodic Report Summary 1 - COFAS 2 (COFAS 2)

The Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (Forte), formerly known as the Swedish Research Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS), funds research for people’s health, working life and welfare. We are a government agency under the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. Forte funds and initiates both basic and needs-driven research which means that the results benefit both research and society. Forte is also responsible for coordinating research within the areas of socio-scientific alcohol and drugs research, functional impairments, international migration and ethnic relations, children and young people and the elderly.
The COFAS2 programme provides opportunities for internationalisation and researcher mobility within Forte’s research areas for researchers at the postdoc level. The COFAS2 programme is supported by Marie Curie Actions within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union. COFAS2 offers researchers a great opportunity to go abroad to advance their research and career, and it is aimed at both outgoing fellows from Sweden: Forte Outgoing International Postdoc (FOIP), as well as incoming fellows to Sweden: Forte Incoming International Postdoc (FIIP).
The objective of COFAS2 is to develop competence and at the same time promote international research mobility and cross-border research collaboration. The host institution should have a good reputation in the applicant’s research area and the time abroad should add significantly to the applicant’s knowledge and competence in view of future research within Fortes areas of responsibility. The grants are primarily open to recently graduated researchers. The applicant must be connected to a Swedish research institution and he or she may spend the mobility period at a research institution abroad. Applicants can apply for up to 24 consecutive months abroad, followed by a repatriation period in Sweden of maximum half the time spent abroad for the FOIP fellows.
The COFAS2 programme is based on the experiences from the COFAS programme (EC grant agreement number 229728), which lasted 2009-2015. In COFAS2, Forte aims to improve the gender dimension in the programme. To increase the interest among female researchers an extra support, a family allowance, for dependent family members has been introduced to facilitate for fellows to combine career and family. Furthermore, applicants who find it difficult to spend longer periods of time abroad, due to family reasons, may also divide the time abroad with work at the home institution. In COFAS2, three calls for fellowship proposals are planned, and through the programme Forte expects to award 30 fellows in total.
Within the first project period, two of the three COFAS2 calls have been carried out and 19 fellows have been awarded. Updated information about the programme and its calls is found at http://forte.se/en/cofas/. The graphical profile that Forte has developed for the COFAS and COFAS2 programmes is attached (Annex 1).
