MATURE: Biogeochemistry of the maximum turbidity zones in estuaries
This is a multidisciplinary project involving biology, chemistry and hydrodynamics. This team has developed a 3-dimensional model to simulate estuarine hydrodynamics and sediment transport. This software package allows the study of zones of maximum turbidity, areas where the environmental issues are more important since polluting materials from the rivers have longer residence times in these areas. This is also a tool of great interest and utility for the intelligent design and management of navigation channels in estuaries, as well as for work in ports and harbours. The team also undertook a project on the study of western Mediterranean hydrodynamics and another one on the exchanges between the continental platform and deep ocean.
