Final Report Summary - HYBRIDQCIRCUITS (Hybrid Quantum Electrical Circuits)

This Career Integration Grant (CIG) was intended to support the establishment by the Researcher, Dr. Peter Leek, of a new research group and laboratory at the University of Oxford, researching ‘hybrid’ superconducting circuits, in which different promising quantum mechanical device elements are coupled together in superconducting circuits. The devices may have application in a future quantum technology sector, in which the power of quantum mechanics will be harnessed for new technologies such as quantum computing, simulation, sensing and communications. Superconducting circuits are one of the technologies currently being intensively developed for particular application in quantum computing. As well as making fast progress in this direction, superconducting circuits have also been shown to be useful for connecting different types of quantum system together in so-called ‘hybrid’ circuits. The hybrid device elements focused on in this project are microwave frequency mechanical waves, known as ‘surface acoustic waves’, carbon nanotubes and electron spins.

During the period of the grant, the Researcher has in particular established the potential of surface acoustic wave resonators as elements of quantum circuits, and become a visible leader in the new research field of ‘quantum acoustics’. With respect to the establishment of the new research group, the Researcher has, with additional support from several other grants, and the host institution, built a completely new set of laboratories for carrying out microwave experiments at cryogenic temperatures on quantum electrical circuits. A new team of PhD students and PDRAs has been recruited over this time, and at present the group numbers 9 researchers in total, under the leadership of the Researcher. Hence the Researcher is now very well integrated and has established the basis for a long term independent research activity at the host institution.
