Final Report Summary - LIQAD (Long-range interacting quantum systems and devices)

The LIQAD project had two main objectives:
1) The study of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms with a focus on quantum many body physics and quantum simulations and to estimate the physical limitations for Rydberg-based quantum networks.
2) To create integratable room temperature devices which exploit Rydberg atoms to create sensitive field sensors and single photon emitters
One half or the work has been carried out with ultracold atoms or quantum degenerate gases, whereas the other half relied on atomic vapour of room temperature atoms.

The main achievements are:

• Coupling a single electron impurity to the excitation spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensate
• Design, setup and regular operation of a second generation cold Rydberg experiment
• Single ion detection below shot-noise in the new setup
• Creation of new kinds of Rydberg molecules (D-state molecules, mixed singulett-triplett molecules, butterfly molecules)
• Detailed understanding of the Amaldi-Segre density shift of Rydberg lines
• Time resolved spectroscopy of reaction dynamics of Rydberg atom – ground state collisions

• Fabrication of vacuum tight vapour cells with metallic feedthroughs by anodic bonding
• Coherent Rydberg excitation inside hollow core fibres
• Observation of the Rydberg blockade in a thermal vapour
• Pulsed four-wave mixing involving Ryderbg states in a thermal vapour
• Observation of Rydberg aggregation processes
• Coupling of photonic waveguides to an atomic cladding
