Mid-Term Report Summary - QMES (Quantum Mesoscopics with Vacuum Trapped Nanoparticles)

The objective of this project is to control the dynamics of an optically levitated nanoparticle in high vacuum. By means of external lasers and optoelectronic modulators we can drive and perturb the nanoparticle in a desired fashion and to counteract its motion. We managed to cool the particle’s center-of-mass temperature by six orders of magnitude and achieve record force sensitivities. The system allowed us to measure the rate of momentum transfer between light and the particle (photon recoil heating) and to advance close to the quantum regime where the particle can be in two locations simultaneously.
