Mid-Term Report Summary - EVOBREED (Evolutionary strategy for plant breeding)

The EVOBREED project considers retrotransposons as an endogenous source of genetic variation and aims to liberate in a controlled fashion their movement and thus induce novel phenotypic diversity to be selected by breeders for improvement of crops. At this stage of the project it is still not possible to predict whether the proposed strategy will be successful and thus of value as a novel approach for generation of superior crop plants. Nonetheless, in the first half of the project, we have achieved significant progress in precise annotation of retrotransposons in crop genomes, which includes predictions of their mobilization capacities. In addition, we developed sensitive detection methods of their activities. Therefore, the second part of the project will be decisive for whether we will be able to demonstrate that this hidden genetic variation could be activated in a controlled fashion for the benefit of future agriculture.
