Mid-Term Report Summary - WEAR3D (Wearable Augmented Reality 3D Displays)

Wear3D project aims to overcome the fundamental challenges of wearable augmented reality (AR) displays and achieve compact form factor while simultaneously providing a wide field of view (FOV), high (retinal) resolution and natural (visual fatigue free) 3D experience. My team at Koc University Optical Microsystems Laboratory have exploited the wearable display challenges from multiple perspectives and developed novel theoretical framework and computational algorithms, and built several proof of concept laboratory demonstrators. We made good progress using LC devices and MEMS laser pico-projectors. We also developed a number of novel micro-structured surfaces for display and light field based imaging. We have also been working on real-time trackers and sensors as they are also important parts of a wearable AR/VR systems. The project has been extremely innovative and we filed 11 international PCT patent applications and published several journal and conference papers.
