Mid-Term Report Summary - SALIENSY (Mapping the synaptic circuits for salience)

This ERC StG SalienSy aims to decipher a hierarchical organization of neural circuits responsible for the immediate behavioural reaction to a rewarding or aversive event as a primary process for subsequent goal-directed actions. We proposed a strategy heavily grounded on the laboratory expertise in in vitro electrophysiology that over the course of the years we complemented with molecular, genetic, mapping, optogenetic and behavioral approaches. Using these tools we unraveled specific properties of metabotropic signaling in the LHb, and the mechanisms responsible for aberrant overactivity of the LHb instrumental for depressive symptoms in the context of addiction and depression. We will continue working toward a research line that want to ultimately provide significant and unexpected outcomes on the cellular mechanisms for rewarding and aversive processing relevant in health and disease.
