Periodic Report Summary 3 - GREENBARRELS (Contra-Rotating Open Rotor (CROR) Propeller barrels)

Project Context and Objectives:
The Greenbarrels projects, led by ASCAMM and with partner Denn, is the materialization of a proposal to answer a Call for Proposal from Cleansky Program, which topic was to design, manufacture and deliver several components to be integrated in the CROR Demo engine which is being developed in the SAGE2 ITD from Cleansky, under the lead of SAFRAN-SNECMA.
In concrete the components are the so called Transition and Aero Ducts or called as well “Barrels” due to their shape. Main of the functions of these components is:
Transition ducts:
▪ To channel the flow of main hot gases stream to the exhaust
▪ To channel the secondary airstream (together with rotating cowls)
Aero ducts:
▪ To channel cooling air for the lubrication oil
The overall project objectives are:
• Design of all components for the Ground Test Bench
• Manufacturing of a set of barrels (transition and aero ducts)
• Delivery of components to be assembled in the SAGE 2 Demo Engine

Project Results:
Since the beginning of the project the work performed and achieved is:
Analysis of requirements
Selection of architecture for the barrels
Material and process detailed selection
Risk analysis update
Selection and analysis of concept for the Concept Review (CoR)
Passing the CoR
Starting the Preliminary Design Phase
Performing all preliminary design phase (extended by 12 months)
Carrying out manufacturing trials
Passing the Preliminary Design Review (PDR)
Starting the Critical Design Phase
Passing the Critical Design Review (CDR)
Start manufacuring phase by procurement of all raw material

ASCAMM has performed a continuous detailed definition of raw material for manufacturing , which included search and finding supplier for the kind of big rotating critical parts (from more that 600 to more than 1500 mm diameter), as works that has been performed since project started in order to guarantee the raw material availability.

Potential Impact:
The expected final results for the project are:
• To deliver all the barrels components for the SAGE 2 Demo Engine Ground Test Bench

The impacts of GREENBARRELS are linked to SAGE2 CROR success in terms of:
• CO2 emission reduction
• Fuel consumption reduction
• NOx reduction
