Exploitable results Group technology based cost calculation for small batch series A flexible software system has been developed that allows one to implement cost calculation models that allow companies to make cost calculations for their products faster and more accurately. The software is a combination of spreadsheet and database functions. For each of the participating companies, a cost calculation model has been elaborated and implemented in software. Whenever possible, these models have been generalized for the different sectors involved in the project. A lot of expertise has been gained about consultancy work with small and medium sized enterprises in building cost calculation methodology and reorganizing companies so that they are able to have a more transparent view about their costs. On the other hand, integration possibilities between cost calculation, process planning and planning have been provided and implemented in companies. An important contribution also comes from the implementation of group technology for cost calculation which seems to be very successful in classifying and retrieving cost data by defining families of components or assemblies with common characteristics which can be treated similarly in production.
