Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The AMPYXAP3 project covers detailed design, manufacturing and first article testing of the AP3 PowerPlane, an Airborne Wind Energy system. Airborne Wind Energy is a next generation of airborne wind turbines, set to dramatically reduce the cost of wind energy, with reduced visual, noise and ecological impact.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During the first part of the project, a significant part of the detailed design has been completed, and feasibility studies for several potential sites to safely and reliably deploy the AP3 PowerPlane have been completed.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Ampyx Power is engaging with airspace authorities since 2010 in order to ensure a clear regulatory framework for the deployment of AWE devices is developed, allowing commercialisation of this disruptive new technology while adhering to appropriate safety standards. On 2015, rapid development of legislation on Remotely Piloted Aicraft Systems (RPAS), more commonly referred to as drones, by EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, has occurred. This allows for the AMPYXAP3 project to address and incorporate certification matters as well, which was not foreseen at the start of the project.
