Mid-Term Report Summary - NASTAR (Nano-Sensitizer Cancer Cell Targeted Radiotherapy)

The NaSTaR project aims to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy by delivery of radiosensitizer drugs using liposome drug delivery systems. To understand the performance of the liposome drug carriers we have developed an imaging reagent that can be used as companion diagnostics to select cancer patients that would benefit from the developed treatment. This companion diagnostic will be investigated in cancer patients in 2017. We have further learned that the immune system plays a dramatic role in the type of responses we see when using the developed treatment methods in mice. We have been able to cure >70% of mice with cancer and analyzed how the immune system plays a unique role in the effects we observe. We are now further investigating the cellular responses that are responsible for these large cure rates to see if there is a path to transferring this type of treatment to human trials for the future benefit of cancer patients.
