Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

• RMS Ltd is developing road marking retro reflectance (RL) measuring equipment (RetroTek-M) for the global market. The Dualine proposal is to enable RMS Ltd to complete the development of this equipment from a TRL 7- Demonstration system to TRL 9 – full commercial application, technology available for customers. The advantages RetroTek will deliver relative to the current state of the art are significant and game changing. RetroTek will provide a 50% reduction in the cost of line inspection by performing a two line inspection (one either side of a road lane) on one pass, compared to single line inspection by the current state of the art. Customers such as Road Marking Contractors, Road Survey Companies and Road Authorities are requesting improvements in RL measuring equipment such as driver-only inspection, vehicle flexibility, no lane closure requirements during inspection and real-time data, all of which RetroTek provide.

• This project will provide significant commercial benefit to RMS Ltd in increased revenue, to its customers in significant cost savings and to the wider community by providing a much safer night-time driving environment. Dualine proposal is an integral part of and fully compliments the business strategy of RMS Ltd. This proposal addresses many of the aims of the Council as detailed in Framework Programme for Research & Innovation(2014-2020) relating to Smart Green and Integrated Transport ref: 2011/0402(CNS), The technology is an efficient maintenance and inspection system (4.1.2); It reduces traffic congestion by eliminating road closures and efficiently uses and manages surface transport infrastructure (4.1.2);gives road authorities a tool to maintain safety standards and assists towards the target of zero fatalities in road transport by 2050 (4.2). Researched and developed in the EU, it assists Europe’s aim of becoming the world leader in efficiency and safety in all modes of transport (4.3).

• The main objectives of the project are subdivided into two main groups as outlined below
o Commercial Objectives including completion of a detailed market analysis, product commercialisation plan and engaging and agreeing terms with suitable channel partners and distributors and achieving product certification for applicable markets.
o Technical Objectives which involve solving technical issues regarding the European and American systems and ultimately delivering products that meet the minimum requirements for both markets and are adequately tested to prove performance. In addition, product documentation and support infrastructure needs to generated to ensure a good customer experience when th product is received and used.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

The work carried out during the reporting period is progressing well and in accordance with our overall plans.
WP1 is project management and work required for this work package includes general project planning, risk and project management and early identification and resolution of potential issues, this work package is ongoing and progressing well.
WP2 involves market analysis & the generation of commercial reports and plans. The market analysis deliverable (D2.1) has been completed and sales & marketing plan which is due Month 13 is on schedule.
WP3 is product development for the European system and the first deliverable to complete product development was completed during month 11 this is now entering the formal test and validation phase as planned.
WP4 has commenced and is progressing well in accordance with our plan, work has commenced on the first deliverable which is Completion of USA Product Development. This deliverable is due on M16 and we remain confident that we will meet our deliverable target.
WP5 is delivery of product documentation and customer support and is ongoing with support infrastructure being established for initial pilot tests and preliminary documentation created for outline set-up and overview support. There are no deliverables due on WP 5 at this stage. WP6 is exploitation and dissemination, and the first deliverable has been completed for this work package which is to create the website. Work is ongoing on this package and will continue for the duration of the project

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The expected potential impact for the project is as described below
To enable & facilitate market uptake and distribution of the RetroTek-M technology
Increase infrastructure capacity and optimise EU structural funds for maintenance costs for all transport modes by halving the time required to perform line measurements, enable predictive estimation, reduce the cost of post processing surveys.
Provide data & results that will allow new maintenance techniques provide enhanced performance of road infrastructure.
Greatly simplify the process of performing road inspections and analysing data thereafter meaning more inspections will take place which
ultimately will result in much improved road marking & visibility which will have a significant reduction in the number of road traffic
