Improvement of the quality and compatibility of food consumption and food composition data in Europe

Guidelines for the collection and presentation of data for the compilation of European food balance sheets were developed and the development of new methods for estimating food intake at the population level to complement existing food balance sheets data were discussed. Guidelines and a proposal for improvement and harmonization of food data in household budget surveys in Europe were developed. Special software was also developed in order to be able to compare data and it was found that the aggregation level of the available data and the link with food composition tables is a major problem. European studies on individual dietary intake data were updated and the need to develop a proposal for a Europe-wide individual food consumption survey was considered. The circulation of relevant section of INFOODS Guidelines was completed. The revised European guidelines for sampling and analysis of foods for inclusion in food composition databases was prepared and a book published. A project to try to identify sources of food composition data per country and to develop an inventory of laboratories regularly carrying out food analyses was proposed. A rationale document was prepared to form a basis for further development of the food code and a manual to use the code was developed. Tests were developed to measure reproducibility, accuracy, back translation, comprehensiveness, internationality, retrieval of food groupings and collapsing of foods and Eurocode-2 was evaluated. The Langual food code was evaluated and software was developed for coding and retrieving Langual information. An international steering Committee and a technical committee, which will address technical problems related to Langual, were established.
