Mid-Term Report Summary - TOMCAT (Theory of Mantle, Core and Technological Materials)

We use first-principles methods to study materials and systems of interest in the Earth and (exo)planets and technological materials. First-principles means we use fundamental physics, quantum mechanics, and large scale supercomputer simulations, to understand materials without the input of any experimental data. We use the standard model for materials, called density functional theory (DFT), as well as state-of-the-art methods that can surpass the accuracy of experiments, especially at extreme conditions like in the center of the Earth or other planetary interiors. We work to understand how materials work, and to predict their properties. This work has important impact on our understanding of the Earth as well as to design better technological materials.
