Spintronics, controlling the spin of the electron in addition to its charge, is currently present in different mainstream technologies such as magnetic hard-disk drives. However, there are still many open questions regarding how the spin is injected, transported and controlled in different materials. Among those, organic semiconductors offer an ideal platform for spintronics due to their small sources of spin decoherence.
Along this project we have used a multidisciplinary approach, merging surface science techniques, optimization of the materials growth and advanced device fabrication. Thanks for the extraordinary support of the European Research Council we have been able to tackle key issues in the nascent field of organic spintronics.
For example, we now understand and know how to control the role of the metal/molecular hybridization and its role in the orientation of the spin. We have been able to develop new techniques for the study of critical metal/molecular interfaces. Moreover we have built multiple different organic spin devices and we have test and benchmark them with current and future spintronic applications.
