Periodic Report Summary 2 - CLEARGEN DEMO (The Integration and demonstration of Large Stationary Fuel Cell Systems for Distributed Generation)

Project Context and Objectives:
The CLEARgen Demo project addresses the topic “SP1-JTI-FCH.2011.3.6 aiming on Field demonstration of large stationary fuel cell systems for distributed generation and other relevant commercial or industrial applications”. As one of the key partners bailed out of the original consortium the project was put on hold. After a lot of desiccations and work a new consortium were formed with only one of the original partners surviving and a new installations site identified. The new consortium went through a process of reinventing the project and an amending process with the FCH JU program office which finally succeeded and this second period was initiated. In the new consortium DANTHERM (Denmark), supported by Ballard Power Systems (Canada), will make design improvements to the existing ClearGen(tm) system, building parts for a one-megawatt fuel cell system to meet the specific requirements of European customers. DANTHERM will also manage the project. HDF (France) will design installations, integrate, commission and operate the system at a demonstration site provided by AQUIPAC (France), validating and maintaining system performance over the duration of a two and a half year demonstration period. HDF will also realize all procedures for permitting will prepare the site and will install facilities. JEMA (Spain) will be in charge of electrical integration of the fuel cell system to injecting electricity in the public grid. The CNRS-ICMCB (France) will be responsible for data analysis and dissemination of results. The total project duration is ninety two months ending in December 2019.

Project Results:
The consortium is now validated and contracts are signed off between beneficiaries but also with Ballard Power System which provides the parts and components of the fuel cell and with AkzoNobel which provides hydrogen flow.
The design of the fuel cell complying with European standards is realized and its built has begun. Implantation on the site of AkzoNobel is identified. The way to collaborate and the protocols necessary to security strategy are ongoing between HDF and AkzoNobel.
Currently, the critical points are the valuation of electricity produced by the fuel cell and the design of the purification unit. This last one will be defined in the next weeks as well as the connection to the electrical grid.
The aim of the project CLEARgen Demo remains the implementation of a large fuel cell in respect to EU specifications in the site of Ambès and the demonstration of the viability of such technology, the decrease of operation costs and the increase of stacks lifetime.

The start of the 2nd project period were delayed as the pre-financing of the project was locked up in a trust fund controlled by the former project coordinator Logan Energy and law firm in Edinburgh. The fund control was transferred to the project in June 2015 were the activities could be kickoff with a project meeting in Bordeaux representing a delay of 12 months.

Potential Impact:
It is expected that the CLEARgen Demo field demonstration will show that large stationary PEM fuel cell systems for distributed power generation are environmentally friendly and commercially relevant for chemical process industrial applications where alternatively excess hydrogen today is vented. Certain chemical productions and petroleum refineries are today producing large quantities of by-product hydrogen that can be used to produce clean, load-following electrical power on a distributed basis, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The aim of the project CLEARgen Demo remains the implementation of a large fuel cell in respect to EU specifications in the site of Ambès, Bordeaux and the demonstration of the viability of such technology, the decrease of operation costs and the increase of stacks lifetime.
Demonstrating the CLEARgen Demo shows that the technology now is ready for a broader deployment in the connection with the relevant industries and the setup will serve as a showcase for other relevant industries and will break the ground for further installations in Europe.

The conversion of vented hydrogen into useful electrical power and heat will lower the environmental load on the planet.
The demonstration site was chosen for the ability to provide a strong reference and show case in order to convince other European industries with hydrogen as a by-product that large fuel cell power systems will be a green solution to get value from vented hydrogen.
