Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The Need
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Most of the world's population lives in countries where overweight and obesity kill more people than underweight (this includes all high-income and most middle income countries). Overweight and obesity, as well as their related non-communicable diseases, are largely preventable. Supportive environments and communities are fundamental in shaping people’s choices, making the healthier choice of foods and regular physical activity the easiest choice (accessible, available and affordable), and therefore preventing obesity.
According to country estimates over 50% of both men and women in the WHO European Region are overweight, and roughly 23% of women and 20% of men are obese. Rising overweight and obesity are also linked to the rise in other non-communicable diseases related to diet and lifestyle.
Fortunately obesity and its related diseases are largely preventable. According to the WHO, diet and exercise are key to addressing these problems. This is a struggle for many European/global citizens. People struggle with properly planning meals, buying healthy foods, balancing nutrition, etc. It can be even more difficult for people with food allergies or health problems such as Diabetes as they don´t always know what they should eat or avoid eating, the correct portions, or ingredients etc. People often turn to diets to help them “eat healthy” and lose weight. However, personalized diets (via a nutritionist) are often expensive and restrictive, and fad diets are aimed at losing weight quickly rather than achieving a healthy and balanced diet. Additionally they are not meant for people who suffer from these diseases.
Recently the science of nutrigenetics has been uncovering the keys to the best ways to feed our bodies. Nutrigenetics is the science of the effect of genetic variation on dietary response and the role of nutrients and bioactive food compounds in gene expression, respectively . This science is helping us understand how to eat and exercise right on an individual level without the need for hard to follow diets.
At Líder Doctor we have been part of the scientific community studying the effects our genes have on our health. This research and our background in the medical research guided our development of a simple, innovative and inexpensive solution in the form of a mobile app to help individuals manage their diets simply and effectively in their daily lives. We adapt our diets to multiple pathologies and diseases and thanks to genetic studies we can use them to act from a preventive medicine point of view rather than simply treating/managing a disease that is already present.
Nutrigen seeks to provide prevention and treatment for individuals’ health, based on highly personalized nutrition plans and genetic adaptations via digital services with a focus on preventive medicine at the onset of the main pathologies of society. We have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm that provides personalized diet and nutrition recommendations in the form of personalised meal plans through our free app, Nutrigen Service.

Overall Objectives
The overall objective of the project is structured by several specific objectives that will centre Líder Doctor efforts into obtaining a new platform design, the enhancement of the new functionalities, integration of third parties functionalities, validation of the solution by end users and potential clients, obtaining partnership agreements; and implement commercial and communication activities in order to maximize the growth of the company.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

"Nutrigen seeks to provide prevention and treatment for individuals’ health, based on highly personalized nutrition plans and genetic adaptations via digital services with a focus on preventive medicine at the onset of the main pathologies of society. We have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm that provides personalized diet and nutrition recommendations in the form of personalised meal plans through our free app, Nutrigen Service.

The app provides users with personalized nutrition plans that include 5 suggested meals a day and the corresponding recipes and shopping lists. We also provide specialized diets for people with hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, pregnancy-first half and second half, lactation and what is more important we are able to provide diets to user who present any combination of this pathologies or physiological states. Users have the option to further enhance and personalize their experience by purchasing our genetic test that allows us to check for genetic predisposition to obesity. We use the information from the test to provide the user with a diet tailored to their genetic makeup through the same app. Thanks to the algorithm we developed, which operates dynamically, users can see how they are evolving against their objectives, with new adapted diets automatically generated every 15 days to help the user stay in line with their goals. This makes it easy for our users to live a healthier lifestyle without having to spend lots of time and money to get the best nutrition for them.

The first generation of our app is already in the market putting us at a TRL7 (Technology Readiness Level 7). However, there are several improvements that need to be made to ensure that our product is fully optimized to reach its mass market potential.

During the last two years we have fullfill the following achievements:

1) We have created a community of more than 130.000 thousands users. With a daily Growth of around 100 to 300 users.
2) We have sold more than 600 DNA tests.
3) We have listened to our users in order to know what are their really needs.
4) We have validated our Business model.
5) We are creating a Health on demand service that adds Videoconference, the connection with wearables and CRM that will be incorporated to our Nutrigen app on March.
6) We will launch a Marketing campaign with the most important Radio Group on Spain on terms of audience "Cope Group"."

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

We have carried out a preliminary analysis of the current state of the art/competing solutions. Based on our research we are currently unique in Mobile Health market. Even though there are many options with apps in the market offering fitness and diet options, there currently are no options combining them as we do. Nutrigen Service is the only mobile app that provides such extensive services (the majority for free), personalized/dynamic diets, DNA test, personal nutritionist, special diets for food allergies and weight related illnesses etc. However, there are few Web based companies that offer similar services.

Our innovative algorithms have allow us to provide a dynamic diet which provides our users the following advantages:
Diets continually adapted to the weight objectives of the users.
DNA test not necessary to take advantage of our services.
We provide diets adapted to single or multiple pathologies, allergies, and intolerances, not provided by our competitors.
We are able to adapt all the genetic results that we measure with the DNA test and combine them with the characteristics and objectives selected by the user in their profile.
Thanks to our data driven perspective we are able to constantly advance our algorithm and our database of dishes in order to provide our users the diet which best fits their profile. We guarantee the proper portions of the necessary foods groups in all our menus.
We will combine diet and fitness so that users can have the best chance of achieving their goals, with the support of our virtual consultants.
We will offer gamification of the app as a way to engage users and build fidelity. To our knowledge none of our competitors are doing this.

We already have over 135,000 downloads, with a solid growth rate of 100 - 300 new downloads every day.
