Mid-Term Report Summary - DISORDER CONTROL (Tuning Disorder in Chalcogenides to realize Advanced Functional Devices)

Tailoring material properties is one of the key goals in material science and solid state physics. In this project we follow a novel avenue. We utilize disorder to achieve new functionalities. In the last 2 years we have realized that there is a unique class of materials where disorder plays a significant role for material properties, while it is rather inefficient in many other solids. Hence we have tried to identify the fingerprint of these materials where disorder can play a major role. We have succeeded in this step and have now a novel bond indicator which enables the automatic search for such compounds. Now we utilize these materials to reveal the impact of disorder and have already demonstrated major impact on transport properties relevant for application in novel memories that can be used in next generation mobile devices (smart phones, etc.) as well as thermoelectrics (that can turn waste heat into electricity).
