Periodic Report Summary 1 - KINOPTIM (KINOPTIM: An ICT solution for the implementation of an innovating fall prevention and holistic management service for the elderly community)

KINOPTIM’s starting point for development was the indisputable fact that approximately 28-35% of people aged of 65 and above fall each year, increasing to 32-42% for those over 70 years of age leading to an explosion of social and healthcare expenditures (WHO. Falls among the elderly community is thus a major public health problem.
The objective of KINOPTIM is to develop, integrate and pilot an infrastructure for the implementation of a comprehensive and holistic fall management service by means of innovative usage of technologies. Thereby, it will rely on ICT and virtual reality gaming throughout the exploitation of haptic technologies and vision control and will address older people living in the community, both in a preventative (falls prevention) and reactive manner (detection safety and independent living support).
The work to be carried out is structured around 5 Work Packages:
WP1: User Requirements
WP2: KINOPTIM service and platform specification
WP3: Prototyping, design and development of the KINOPTIM platform
WP4: Pilot trials and evaluation
WP5: Dissemination and exploitation
During the 2 first years of the project’s life cycle, KINOPTIM consortium has achieved the following per Work Package:
WP1: We have assessed the requirements and needs of all stakeholders using the KINOPTIM infrastructure (older people living independently, service and support providers: healthcare professionals, informal carers) in order to ensure that we have taking into consideration preconditions relating to the specific characteristics of elderly people including non-fallers and fallers. We have used traditional means of requirements collection such as interviews and questionnaires. The results of this effort can be found in D1.1. This WP has been concluded.
WP2: In this WP which has been already concluded we have specified the architecture of the KINOPTIM infrastructure, we have defined the fall prevention service towards daily living as well as continued wellness, we have also defined the dedicated e-learning application and finally we have set up the metrics to test user’s acceptance of the overall solution. This work has been thoroughly reported in three deliverables: D2.1 - KINOPTIM Service and platform specifications, D.2.2. KINOPTIM Legal, ethics & Regulatory specification and D.2.3. Standards and specifications for KINOPTIM interoperability
WP3: This is an ongoing WP which constitutes the main development WP of the project. It has started from M6 and will continue till M36 (before the launch date of the pilot). It is divided into five separate tasks, 2 out of which have been already concluded.
T.3.1. Development of the tele-monitoring system (concluded)
-Development of the non obtrusive monitoring device based on motion kinematics and kinetics assessment;
-Development of a threshold algorithm for fall risk level determination.
T.3.2. Development of the VR Rehabilitation system (on going – to be concluded in M28)
-Development of the game controllers and of the visualization interfacing;
- Hardware & software integration
- Designing of the graphical users interfaces
T.3.3. Development of the MBI system (concluded)
-Prototyping of the context aware system;
-Integration of security policy.
- Designing of the distinctive graphical users interfaces
T.3.4. Integration of the 3 subsystems (not yet started)
-Plan definition for the integration process to technically ensure the proper operation of the 3 subsystems.
-Implementation of the integration activities
T.3.5. Pre-test for users acceptance (not yet started)
- Platform key features test in advance of its full pilot implementation.
- Reengineering if necessary.
The deliverables of WP3 are all prototypes and during the MTR review we will proceed with a demonstration of the work carried out. For this purpose we will use videos as well as sensors and equipment from our respective laboratories.
WP4: It has not yet started
WP5: This WP will run throughout the projects lifecycle and its major objective is to prepare a publicly available evidence base for supporting exploitation of outcomes beyond the immediate KINOPTIM project duration. The work carried out so far is thoroughly reported in the following deliverables:
