Mid-Term Report Summary - NAUTILUS (Neutron cAptUres consTraIning steLlar nUcleosynthesiS)

The foundations for the successful accomplishment of the experimental goals of the project have been laid during the first 2.5 years of the project:

1) The production of a 85Kr sample and first test measurements proofed the feasibility of a successful determination of the neutron capture cross section of 85Kr.

2) The finalization of the design and ongoing construction of a calorimetric gamma-detector enables the anticipated proof-of-principle experiment of a worldwide new experimental technique for the determination of neutron capture cross sections on radioactive isotopes.

3) Detailed studies of the production of rubidium and strontium during in different phases of the Universe showed that the only missing piece of information for a successful determination of the age of the Universe based on nuclear cosmo-chronometers is the neutron capture cross sections of 85Kr.
