Mid-Term Report Summary - STRUBA (Computational modelling of structural batteries)

This project aims at investigating the effect of electrochemical-mechanical interactions on the mechanical performance of structural batteries. The main concerns for these devices are related to the influence of internal stresses caused by external loads on the performance of the battery and to the detrimental effect that the normal functioning of the battery will have on its mechanical properties. Main research results indicate that i) the mechanical properties of a solid polymer electrolyte material can be improved, in terms of its stiffness, above a threshold concentration value of LiPF6, ii) consistent savings of computational time can be achieved also for irreversible problems, that is those equipped with a strain-softening material, by addressing the reduction of all nonlinear components, and iii) carbon nanotubes can be efficiently represented by means of nonlocal elastic bars.
