Final Report Summary - NANOSTRUCTURE (Solving the nanostructure problem: Understanding, exploiting and designing functional disordered materials)

This project aimed to address the problem of determining the structures of disordered materials, focusing on key problems relevant to fields of chemistry, geology, and physics. It has achieved a mature understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the use of diffraction-based techniques in this regard, demonstrating that the most robust insight can be gained in systems for which disorder is very strongly correlated. By focusing on precisely these problems, the project has obtained important new insight into structure-property relationships in a range of important materials, including ferroelectrics, frustrated magnets, nanocomposites, supramolecular assemblies, organic polymers, metal–organic frameworks,
