Mid-Term Report Summary - QUADOPS (Quantum-Dot Plasmonics and Spasers)

The goal of this project is to create a spaser (or plasmonic laser). By adding sufficient gain to a plasmonic resonator, such a device can generate coherent surface plasmons on a metallic structure, providing an extremely versatile nanoscale source of surface plasmons, photons, and/or intense electromagnetic fields, depending on the design. In the first period of this project, the team has demonstrated the capability to precisely place highly fluorescent quantum dots (semiconductor nanoparticles) on state-of-the-art metallic films to create plasmonic resonators with exceptional figures of merit. This opens the ability to study enhanced light-matter interactions in plasmonic structures. The first spasers have also been demonstrated within the project, accomplishing the primary goal of the research plan.
