Mid-Term Report Summary - NONSPHEREFLOW (Multiscale modelling of gas-fluidized flows of non-spherical particles)

This ERC project is aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of large-scale dense gas-solid flows of rodlike particles, relevant for the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass. A multi-scale approach is employed, where the gas-solid flow is described by three different models: one very detailed, where the gas flow around the particles is precisely described, one intermediate, where the interaction between gas and particles is treated in an averaged manner but particles still collide with each other explicitly, and one coarse-grained, where the particle interactions are also described in an averaged manner. We have implemented the latter 2 models in OpenFoam, which is a popular solver for hydrodynamic flows. Our models have been, and will be, validated by comparison with one-to-one lab-scale experiments.
