MULTIMEDIA AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM BASED TOURISM APPLICATIONS AUTHORING SYSTEM

Exploitable results

In the travel industry, multimedia systems offer the opportunity for travel operators to provide a higher level of customer care through customized and detailed information services. The MAGICTOUR system combines standard geographical information system (GIS) technology with multimedia technology to form an easy-to-use tool that gives tour operators, travel agents and tourism offices the power to provide current information quickly, in a graphical format. Several prototypes have been implemented successfully. The system architecture comprises five major components: the user-friendly man-machine interface, a basic GIS library, the core multimedia authoring system, a gateway to external GIS tools, a gateway to external reservation systems, and a gateway to external databases. The GIS features make it possible to manage georeferenced objects and to perform distance calculus on vector maps rather than bitmaps. This means that maps can be panned, scaled and zoomed by the user and optimal distances can be calculated. Hyperlinks have been created in the application between GIS objects and multimedia objects. Use of a standard database protocol, open database connectivity (ODBC), reduces the effort required to import and export information from and to external systems.
