Final Report Summary - MOBILECLOUD (Linking Sino-European Research Institutions in the Mobile Cloud Computing Era)

• Project objectives:
Mobile Cloud Computing emerges as a new computing paradigm where mobile devices exploit the available cloud computing platform for performing specific tasks and/or accessing data on demand rather than on the individual devices themselves. A key element missing in current mobile cloud computing design is a sufficient consideration on mobile devices’ bandwidth availability and energy consumption for both cloud computing devices and mobile devices.

The MobileCloud project aims to bridge the above gap, addressing how mobile cloud computing services can be delivered in such environments in a highly efficient and energy-efficient manner. More specifically, the project aims to provide a stimulating and structured platform for the exchange of researchers and for the joint development of innovative ideas in the emerging areas within mobile cloud computing and beyond. To achieve this goal, a broad combination of eight universities and research institutions in Europe and China will collaborate together and create an international, multidisciplinary (cloud computing, mobile computing, telecommunications, computer systems and network optimization) environment for an innovative research experience and knowledge exchange in mobile cloud computing.

The S&T objectives of MobileCloud are to investigate innovative methodologies and approaches to optimize mobile cloud computing resources and satisfy service requirements including energy efficiency and high resource utilization in the emerging cloud computing era.

• Summary the work performed and main results achieved in the project:
MobileCloud members performed extremely well in the 3-year project duration. MobileCloud has achieved significant achievements. One aspect is reflected in a number of highly visible publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. MobileCloud published 57 papers in international journals (including 21 in IEEE/ACM Transactions and 2 in IEEE JSAC) and 82 papers in international conferences (including 2 MOBICOM, 2 MobiHoc, 7 INFOCOM, 2 ICNP, 2 ICDCS, 1 PerCom, 1 UbiComp, 1 WWW). Additionally, MobileCloud secondmented researchers made 124 public presentations at host institutions and created or consolidated numerous collaboration topics. Other notable dissemination and knowledge transfer activities included: i) MobileCloud partners hosted 4 China-European workshops on Mobile Cloud Computing, in Nanjing (Apr 2014), Paris (Dec 2014, in conjunction with International Conference on Network of Future 2014), Beijing (Sept 2015) and Milano (July 2016), and co-organized a couple of journal special issues (e.g., JSAC, IEEE Communications Magazine, IJCS, COMCOM) and international conferences (e.g., ACM MobiArch@MobiCom, ACM HotPOST@MobiHoc) specifically related to MobileCloud. ii) MobileCloud partners have formed ad hoc teams transferring project knowledge and experience to several new EU or bilateral research project proposals, some of which got already funded and more are being pursued. iii) Many ESRs/ERs having gained experience and contacts in their secondments have grown in their research career including becoming a faculty or postdoc in partner institutions or other institutions in the same country.

We believe that all of the above are an indication of the excellent work done by the MobileCloud consortium and the recognition achieved in the scientific community.

• Main results and their potential impact and use (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project):
The project offered a means to bridge active European and Chinese researchers in the emerging mobile cloud computing era and the impacts of these results are both scientifically and socio-economically. It has shown a lot of potentials by having joint exchanges and research collaborations, evidenced by a large number of joint publications, a couple of joint research proposals and co-organization of joint events, scientific conferences and journal special issues. The wider societal implications of the project have been anticipated long-lasting: due to the mobility of secondment researchers, resources and knowledge could be largely exploited for the need of future ICT talents, bilateral and international collaborative R&D programs and new ways of thinking and doing. New projects have been boosted with the MobileCloud collaborations and new initiatives in Sino-European joint education and research have been started. During their secondment periods several ESR researchers have found new opportunities e.g., a new collaborative partner for continuing their scientific career after PhD; at least three ESRs and 2 ERs have effectively been such case.

• List of Partners
Our team comprising researchers with complementary expertise is very well positioned to design, develop and evaluate the mobile cloud computing technology, contributing to a new low-energy, scalable and highly efficient networking and computing paradigm. Our efforts will foster continued close cooperation between research communities of Europe and China.
