SINTOMA: optimizing machine tool set-up

European machine tool manufacturers and users have found that many in-service faults, especially during the warranty period, could be avoided by improving the machine tool set-up process. New and improved machine tool set-up and test procedures developed under the SINTOMA project have demonstrated direct benefits in terms of equipment reliability and availability, process quality and reductions in design and manufacturing lead times.

The SINTOMA methodology provides improvements in the assembly, set-up and testing processes for machine tools both at the factory and at customers' premises. This is achieved by formalizing the testing and quality assurance procedures. Several new technologies have been introduced, including sensors, communications equipment, measurement technology, data acquisition and display systems, artificial intelligence techniques, and the latest in man-machine user interfaces. The test system was originally implemented for UNIX/Motif workstations but portable personal computer (PC) versions have also been developed for use by service personnel at the customer's site. Data from all of the testing products and procedures are consolidated and stored in a central database with different levels of user access. As well as allowing manufacturing and service personnel to examine the previous performance of a particular machine, the data can also be used to improve overall machine design, for example by detecting systematic assembly, accuracy or adjustment failures.
