TIMELY: electricity network failure protection

Decision support systems based on time-constrained reasoning techniques will help to diagnose electricity networks under abnormal operating conditions. The generality of the TIMELY system is achieved by employing model-based reasoning (MBR) techniques which utilize explicit models of the networks concerned. Due to the time-critical nature of the applications, time-constrained reasoning mechanisms must be used. Using multiple model descriptions, at various levels of abstraction and approximation, a progressive reasoning capability is developed to arrive at the best possible diagnosis, and consequent remedy, within the application's prescribed time-constraint. The approach builds on the architecture and tools for model-based diagnosis developed previously.

One of the products produced is PowerDA, a fault diagnosis and condition monitoring system for the electricity industry. Electrical utilities can experience severe operational problems, for example during adverse weather conditions, which affect the security of the high voltage network. In such cases, the utility's staff will seek to avoid total power loss, which can take hours to bring back on-line while leaving large numbers of consumers without power supplies. PowerDA helps prevent control room staff becoming overwhelmed in such scenarios by providing decision support facilities and allowing them to navigate away from disaster. Provision of a reliable and definitive solution is important in such on-the-edge situations.

PowerDA has been validated against data from electricity utilities in Greece, Italy and Norway, and is now offered as an integral part of the electricity supply packages marketed by Syseca Ltd. In addition to electrical transmission and distribution systems, the approach is potentially exploitable for transportation and gas distribution systems.
