Final Report Summary - ORGZEO (Organic Zeolites)

The target of the ERC Project ORGZEO was the development of the next generation of microporous materials, called “Organic Zeolites” combining the best properties of zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, microporous polymers and polyelectrolytes. These organic zeolites are composed of covalently bound organic matter, assembled by common polymerization protocols, but exhibit high permanent porosities and surface areas and further a high amount of network charges, which are balanced by counterions located within the pores.
Three types of organic zeolites have been prepared within this project using either 1. permanently charged organic tectons, 2. reversible chargeable organic tectons or 3. charged metal-organic complexes. Furthermore, novel protocols for the processing of such materials, for example as thin films on electrodes or membranes were developed and applications, especially in gas storage, separation and catalysis have been presented.

In summary, within the ERC project “Organic Zeolites” several new classes of charged microporous polymers have been presented for the fist time. These materials are interesting for a range of applications, especially because their properties can be easily modified by ion exchange, oxidation/reduction or the incorporation of metal ions.
