Periodic Report Summary 2 - NEUROKINEMATICS (Neuronal Dynamics of the Basal Ganglia and the Kinematics of Motor Habits)

When watching a professional tennis competition, musicians of a symphonic orchestra in action or even animals documentaries, it is difficult not to marvel at the exquisitely controlled movements animals and humans are capable to perform. The goal of this project is to better understand the mechanisms underlying motor learning and control and, more specifically, the contribution of the basal ganglia, a brain region whose dysfunction is associated with Parkinson's disease. We address this gap of knowledge using a behaviorally-based strategy. We have developed high-throughput behavioral apparatus and designed tasks to understand the constraints that shape the kinematics of learned motor sequence. In addition, we perturb brain activity at different time and physical scales and record the activity of population of neurons, while animals are learning or performing learned action. So far the results obtained challenge the way we thought that basal ganglia contributes to motor learning.
