Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The project FINE 1 addresses noise and energy reduction of the railway system in Europe. It is important to ensure better acceptance of railway as a mode of transportation (for passenger and freight goods) and promote a modal shift from the automotive or aviation modes.
It also addresses the energy consumption of Europe, which is essential for a more sustainable development.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

The report covers the period of Q4/2016. Since the project could effectively start on 1st December, only few results are included. Nevertheless, following achievements shall be reported:
• Kick-off meeting organised
• Contact lists per Work Packages established an communicated
• TMT and Steco in place. First TMT meeting organised
• Active participation of the complementary projects DESTINATE and OPEUS at the kick-off meeting
• Description of Action aligned with the complementary project. Formalisation of the updated Description of Action pending

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

As the reporting period covers to Q4/2016 and the effective project start was on December 1st, little can be said here.
In perspective, the project will push the state of the art in:
• Standard methods and tools in acoustics for noise prediction and measurement of trains
• Standard methods and tools in acoustics for noise prediction and measurement of train subsystems
• Standard methods and tools in acoustics for energy measurement of trains
• New technologies: active windows for noise protection
• New ways of communicating about noise performance of trains.

At completion, FINE 1 (and its successor FINE 2) targets effective noise reduction and energy consumption of the railway system in Europe
