Periodic Report Summary 2 - TRANSATLANTICILAB (Trans-Atlantic Imaging of Lithosphere Asthenosphere Boundary)

The project started on November 1, 2014. The deep seismic reflection data were acquired in April 2015 using the Schlumberger vessel Western Trident. During about one month experiment, ~2750 km of multi-sensor seismic data were acquired. This is a unique data available in the academic domain. Two PhD students and three post-docs are working on the analyses of these data. The initial processing results show the seismic reflection image down to 100 km depth. These images suggest that the base of the lithosphere consists of two reflections, and a paper is under review summarizing these results. We also analyzed the thickness of upper crust, layer 2A, from zero to 75 My of age, which was presented at the AGU Fall Meeting 2016.

One ocean bottom seismometer refraction survey is programmed to take place in November-December 2017 on board the German Research vessel Maria S Merian and the second one from Mid-August to Mid-September 2018 on the French Research Vessel l’Atlante. We also participated in the deployment of passive broadband ocean bottom seismometer for one year from March 2016 to April 2017.

One paper was presented at the American Geophysical Union in December 2015 and two in 2016 in San Francisco. Singh was invited to give Keynote talks at the SeisMix meeting in Scotland in May 2016, the Oxford Fest in September, 2016, European Geoscience Union, Vienna, April 2017, Japan Geoscience Union, Chiba Japan, May 2017 and Normal Mantle Workshop at the Earthquake Research Institute, Tokyo Japan, May 2017. We also had a Master student working on the enhancement of low frequencies at WesternGeco, Gatwick and wrote a Master Thesis.
