Full scale dynamic load monitoring of rubble-mound breakwaters

Full scale data from in-service rubble mound breakwaters have long been recognized as the missing link to a better understanding of wave energy dissipation in different parts of the structure. The data can also be used to improve existing design methods. An investigation was made of the behaviour of a full scale rubble mound breakwater in order to provide prototype data for the validation of physical and numerical models. To obtain full scale data, a cross section of the north-west breakwater of the Zeebrugge harbour has been instrumented. The wave climate in front of the breakwater (up to 46 km offshore), wave run-up and run-down on the armour layer, pressure and water level variation inside the different parts of the breakwater and wave forces on the armour units have been measured. As a secondary task, monitoring guidelines for rubble mound breakwaters have been established: several monitoring techniques, both structural and environmental, and damage mechanisms have been considered.
