ATLAS: architecture, methodology and tools for computer integrated large scale engineering

A large scale engineering (LSE) project is often a very complex aggregation of several very different views, corresponding to the various experts involved in the project. ATLAS is a computer system which allows these disconnected worlds to be put together, by providing a way of exchanging data continuously and without seams. ATLAS assists productivity and quality enhancement, as well as cost savings, in LSE projects, by improving the communication, relevance and effectiveness of information flow between the many large and small working units. This is being accomplished by the development of a methodology and an open software infrastructure supporting and enabling the sharing of computer-based information models between LSE project reference models. This neutral model includes information on products, processes and resources integrating the different views of the actors involved in the LSE project. The need for knowledge based applications in manufacturing is now clearly recognized. The result allows; neutral, knowledge based extensions to the project modelling kernel to be developed, in order to allow the integration of evolving applications in LSE application platforms. Knowledge based techniques, such as expert system shells, can also be incorporated. The knowledge based modelling kernel extensions can then offer multi-paradigm reasoning functions and knowledge based-oriented facilities.
