Open distributed enviroment architecture and middleware for supervision

OpenDREAMS is a software platform to support design and development of distributed supervision and control applications with persistent storage and critical requirements (high availability, performances). The scope of the project encompasses the definition and specification of such a platform, the implementation being planned in the project follow-up. In the domain of advanced supervision and control systems (SCS), the OpenDREAMS project proposes an object-oriented distributed architecture answering to the following requirements: interoperability and extensibility, building on already existing software and integrating commercial systems; persistent storage facilities; services to manage persistency, querying objects, high availability and distributed transactions; a design methodology to specify and configure a distributed application on top of the platform, taking into account performance requirements; to be compliant with international and industry standards. A case study taken from the Energy Management Systems area, such as the Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic of Thermal Power Plants, has been selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the OpenDREAMS approach.

Technical achievements of OpenDREAMS are: a distributed development and execution platform, integrating Persistency, Transaction, Replication and Query Services which was completely defined and specified; extensions to Orbix (CORBA implementation) were specified, in order to make the product able to cope with the platform requirements; object managers adaptors, allowing two commercial database management system (DBMS) (POET and Oracle) to become interoperable by means of the CORBA architecture, were defined and specified; a set of guidelines and a methodology for the development of distributed SCS applications on top of the OpenDREAMS platform, were defined; a tested application of Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic of Thermal Power Plants was completely specified and designed.
