CATV networks concerns an innovative multimedia server operating on high throughput cable television (CATV) network and using new generations of Internet protocols and new video compression algorithms. The multimedia server controls the quality of multimedia services via real time protocols. CATV networks take advantage of the high bandwidth available on this medium. The server will be demonstrated on tourism and travel agency applications such as video-transmission of clips about tour programmes, hotel locations, etc. The market impact of such technology is not limited to tourism. Enhanced multimedia services on CATV networks open up very large market perspectives for telecommunication and interactive facilities within urban area communities. The technological achievements of the project are twofold. First, new compression algorithms were developed in order to ease the portability of multimedia access for the client and subscriber on CATV networks. Second, a high quality protocol and interface were developed for the automated control and management of the quality of service (QoS). This QoS controller is specialized for CATV or asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) networks but its parameters will be standardized in order to ease the management of any kind of multimedia applications.
