Development of evacuated super insulation panels with a tenfold increase of performance

Exploitable results

The project concerned developing and testing (constructions of) evacuated super insulation panels featuring a tenfold increase of performance. The applications are in low energy buildings, small scale seasonal solar storage systems and appliances like refrigerators and boilers to save energy, material and space, conserving the environment. An evacuated insulation panel with a tenfold increase of performance has been built and tested. The thermal conductivity for the central section of a panel is 2.5 E-3 Wm {-1}K{-1}, measured at a mean temperature of 41.9 C. At room temperature this value will be even lower. Thermal conductivity of current insulation foams are 26 E-3 Wm {-1}K{-1}. An improvement of at least ten times is achieved. Likewise the thickness of the insulation panel can be ten times less. The insulation panel is 100% recyclable (filling and envelope). A lifetime of more than 50 years can be achieved with epoxy adhesives if an internal gas pressure of 10 mbar was to be allowed. This high allowable gas pressure is only possible using powder-fibre mixtures. The thermal conductivity then, however, would be relatively high (5 - 7 E-3 Wm {-1}K{-1}). A tempering apparatus to pre-treat filler material is designed and built. A closing method for panels in a vacuum environment is developed and tested. Hermetic panels are made. Square panels having perpendicular edges without protruding flaps are made. The industrial sectors which are likely to use the results of this project are producers of insulation material, cold stores, producers of furnaces and the deliverers of the panel components like glass or metal plates, thin foils and the powder filling.
